Mixing coloured light
In science today we investigated how rainbows are created and explored the effect of mixing light of different colours. Here are the sites we used to mix coloured light (which some people wanted to explore further).

We also found out about how we see different colours. Different coloured objects absorb particular light colours and reflect backlight which creates the colour we see. e.g. A red book absorbs all other lights and reflects back only red light. To investigate what colours we see when different coloured light beams are combined, change the ratios of light colours on the site below. It shows you how the colours on early colour computer screens were created with only 16 colours.

Optical illusions
We’ve been exploring optical illusions in art and have tried to create some of our own. Some of them work best looked at from a distance in the classroom, but these illusions transfer quite well to a screen. They are 2D drawings that are made to create the illusion of 3D ‘holes’.

WW1 Centenary poetry
Year 6 have been writing some fabulous poetry this week inspired by our reading of some First World War poetry, looking at medals and a Princess Mary chocolate box from the war, as well as finding out about the individual stories behind their medals for some soldiers. More poetry will be posted over the weekend, but a taster has been posted below.
We are also in the process of creating some slides and readings of our poetry. A few have been completed in time for the Centenary on Sunday. Click on the image below to see this short movie of readings and images.
Well done Year 6. You have all tackled some really difficult issues this week and been brilliant in responding to them. You are amazing poets and should be very proud of what you have achieved since Monday.

Smiling whilst suffering by Pelican27
Smiling whilst suffering,
Walking through mud
No hope left in my broken body,
But still I’m
Smiling whilst suffering.
An eerie silence
Shaking and limping,
Hiding and crying,
But still I’m
Smiling whilst suffering.
Gun bullets flying,
The sound of struggling,
The last word,
But he is still
Smiling whilst suffering.
Poppies growing through the destruction,
Families coming to their loved-one’s grave,
Are they smiling whilst suffering?

The chocolate box by Jaguar19
The threatening cloud of war
Slowly fades away,
A glimmer of hope
Appears from out of space.
A bronze box is laid beside me.
It opens majestically,
And a smell fills the nose.
Chocolate.
A luscious aroma expands.
It fills the battlefield.
It brings hope,
Hope.

Breathless Glory, by Koala27
As a distant hero
Struggled to lay his frozen hands on a rifle,
They chose to spend their lives in a river of fear.
As all their dreams are shattered,
Their arms are crossed
They sacrificed their futures
To live a breathless life
With no prayers,
No bells,
You knock on the door of hell.
Whilst you hear the faint sound of mumbling;
Whilst you enter a broken sea of glory.

The Box, by Mongoose23
On and on,
Eternal war,
Hate and death.
A trailer arrives,
A trailer with a mountain of gold.
One by one, a box was received.
One by one, a box was given.
A box of joy,
A box of hope,
A box of pure good.
Opening the box,
Bang!
Glory, encouragement, happiness
Spew, fizz and bubble out.
The trenches and battles are lit by this little box.
This little box,
This little box of light.
